Chris Maus Terms of Service
These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) govern your use of chrismaus.com and the Chris Maus app at play.chrismaus.com (together, “Chris Maus”). Chris Maus is operated by Disruptive Digital Solutions Group (“D2SG”), and in these Terms “we” and “us” mean D2SG. By using Chris Maus you agree to these Terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it. Our Privacy Policy explains what information we collect and how we use it.
1. About Chris Maus
Chris Maus is a story world. In the app you play adventures that an AI storyteller writes and illustrates as you go, create your own characters and adventures, and save the stories you finish as storybooks. Chris Maus is growing, so features, plans and formats may change. Anything described as coming soon is not an offer to sell it.
2. Who can use Chris Maus
- The website is for visitors aged 13 and over.
- Accounts in the app are for adults 18 and over. Children are welcome to play on a grown-up’s account, and that grown-up is responsible for how the account is used.
- Chris Maus is not available in sanctioned countries or to sanctioned persons. You are responsible for following the laws where you live.
3. Your account
You sign in with Google, Apple or Facebook. Your account is for you; keep your sign-in secure, because you are responsible for what happens on your account. Your Chris Maus account is separate from accounts on any other storytelling site.
4. Plans and fair use
Chris Maus has a free plan and a paid plan, Plus. A free account can begin a new story each month and can always finish a story it has begun. Plus lets you play as much as you like, make characters and publish your own adventures. The app shows each plan’s current limits.
Unlimited play is subject to fair-use limits that keep Chris Maus running smoothly for everyone. We may slow or pause activity that looks automated or abusive. We may change what each plan includes, and we will tell you before a change that reduces what your paid plan includes.
5. Membership
Memberships aren’t on sale yet. When they are, these terms apply:
- D2SG is the seller of Chris Maus memberships. Charges appear on your card statement as “D2SG* CHRIS MAUS,” and your receipts come from D2SG. D2SG’s Terms of Service at d2sg.com/terms also apply to purchases; if they differ from these Terms on payment, renewal, cancellation or refunds, whichever is more favorable to you applies.
- Plus is a subscription billed monthly or yearly. Payments are handled by Stripe; we never see your card number.
- Plus renews automatically at the price shown when you joined, until you cancel.
- You can cancel any time from Me → Membership. You keep Plus until the end of the time you have paid for, and you won’t be charged again.
- Except where the law requires otherwise, payments are not refunded for partly used periods.
- If the price changes, we will tell you before the new price applies to you, and you can cancel before it does.
6. Printed books
Printed storybooks aren’t on sale yet. When they are, their price, shipping, delivery times and return terms will be shown before you pay. Books are printed to order by our printing partner.
7. Your content
“Your content” means what you write or make in the app: adventures, characters and their descriptions, and the text you type while you play. You keep ownership of your content.
You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, display and adapt your content (for example, to format it or illustrate it) so we can run and improve Chris Maus, show it to other members as your settings allow, and make things you order, such as printed books.
When you publish an adventure or make a character public, other members can play it, and the AI storyteller can create new stories and pictures from it for them. Stories other members have already saved stay on their bookshelves even if you later unpublish or delete your content. Otherwise, this licence ends when you delete your content, apart from backups we keep for a limited time.
Only submit content you have the right to share, and don’t include other people’s personal information.
8. Stories and pictures made by AI
Stories and pictures are created by AI as you play. They are fiction, made for entertainment. No person reviews them before you see them, so they can be surprising, imperfect or similar to other works. If something seems wrong, let us know and we will look at it.
You may use the stories and storybooks from your own play for personal, non-commercial purposes, such as reading them with your family or sharing them with friends. Because they feature Chris Maus and his world, any commercial use needs our written permission. We can’t promise that AI-made stories or pictures are unique, or that anyone can own copyright in them.
9. Our characters and content
Chris Maus, his story and world, our characters, illustrations, logos, text and the design of the website and app belong to us or our licensors. You’re welcome to share links and talk about him, but please don’t copy, sell or adapt our characters or artwork, or use them to train AI models, without our written permission.
10. Acceptable use
We check content automatically, and we may remove content or suspend accounts that break these rules. Please don’t use Chris Maus to:
- break the law or infringe anyone else’s rights;
- create content that sexualises children, promotes violence or hatred, or harasses anyone;
- share someone else’s personal information without their permission;
- try to make the AI storyteller produce harmful content, or get around our content checks;
- impersonate someone, or use more than one account to get around plan limits;
- use bots or scrapers, overload Chris Maus, or try to reach other people’s accounts or information; or
- use our characters or artwork to train AI models.
11. Karma and creator credits
Karma is a reputation score you earn by playing and creating. It can’t be bought, sold or transferred, and it has no cash value.
We keep track of when storytellers’ and character creators’ work is used so we can credit them. There is no creator payment program right now; if we start one, it will have its own terms.
12. Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time from your Me page in the app; our Privacy Policy explains what happens to your information. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these Terms or puts others at risk. If we close your account while you have a paid membership, for a reason other than a breach of these Terms, we will refund the unused part of your membership.
13. Other services
Chris Maus relies on services we don’t control, such as Google, Apple and Facebook for sign-in and Stripe for payments, and it is built on the NuMuSe storytelling platform (numu.se). Their own terms and privacy policies apply when you use them. Chris Maus uses technology from Anthropic and Google but is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.
14. Disclaimers
Chris Maus is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, and we don’t promise that Chris Maus will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any particular story or picture will meet your expectations.
15. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages arising from your use of Chris Maus, and our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or US$50. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your rights as a consumer where you live.
16. Changes
We may update these Terms as Chris Maus grows. We will post the new version here and update the date above, and if a change significantly affects you we will tell you in the app before it takes effect. If you keep using Chris Maus after a change takes effect, the new Terms apply.
